How to Keep Your Office Clean Between Professional Visits

A cleaner comes twice a week; the other five days are on you. Small habits and a shared kitchen rota do more for a workplace than an extra visit would.

Cleaner wiping down a desk in an open-plan office

Most offices book cleaning two or three times a week. That leaves the majority of working days in between, and it is those days that determine whether the place feels looked after or merely cleaned occasionally.

The kitchen is almost always the problem

In every workplace we service, the shared kitchen generates more complaints than the rest of the office combined. It is also the easiest thing to fix, because it is a scheduling problem rather than a cleaning one.

  • Put a named person on the fridge each week, and clear it out every Friday afternoon
  • Run the dishwasher on a timer at the end of the day, and make emptying it the first task of the morning rota
  • Keep spray and cloths on the counter, not under the sink — visible supplies get used
  • Wipe the microwave interior the day it gets splattered, not the week after

Desks

Cleaners generally cannot clear a desk covered in paperwork, so a cluttered desk simply does not get wiped. A two-minute clear-down at the end of the day is what turns a scheduled visit into an actually clean surface. Keyboards, mice and phones are worth a disinfectant wipe weekly — they carry far more than most people assume.

Entrance and meeting rooms

These are the only rooms your clients see. Keep a mat inside and outside the door through the wet months, and reset meeting rooms immediately after use — cups cleared, whiteboard wiped, chairs straightened. A room that is reset takes seconds; a room left for two days takes real work.

Washrooms

Assign someone to check stock daily. Running out of soap or paper between visits is the single most visible failure in a workplace, and it costs nothing to prevent.

Know what to leave to the crew

Floors, washroom sanitising, high dusting, glass, carpets and waste removal are jobs for a professional visit with the right equipment. Staff habits should cover the small daily resets, not substitute for the real clean. If your team is regularly doing the latter, the visit schedule is probably wrong rather than the team.
