Cleanliness has its own star rating on Airbnb, and it is the category that most reliably pulls the overall score down. It is also the one thing entirely within your control between bookings.
The first thirty seconds
Guests form a judgement almost immediately, and it is rarely based on a thorough inspection. It is based on smell, the state of the floor by the door, and whether the bathroom looks freshly cleaned. Get those three right and you have bought goodwill for everything else.
- Air the place out — a closed unit smells stale within a day, and a strong air freshener reads as covering something up
- Vacuum and mop the entryway properly; it is the first floor anyone sees
- Leave the bathroom visibly dry, with no water spots on the glass or taps
Bedrooms
- Fresh linen on every bed, checked for hairs and marks in daylight
- Mattress protectors checked and changed if there is any doubt
- Under the beds and behind the nightstands checked for left items
- Wardrobes emptied of previous guests' hangers and rubbish
- Surfaces, lamps and switches wiped
Kitchen
- Fridge emptied fully — including condiments guests leave behind
- Dishwasher run and emptied, filter checked
- Every dish, glass and utensil confirmed clean and put away, not just dry
- Kettle, coffee maker and toaster emptied and wiped
- Bin emptied and relined; check under the sink too
Bathroom
- Toilet, including the base and behind the seat hinges
- Shower glass dried and buffed so no spotting shows
- Fresh towels, folded consistently
- Consumables restocked — toilet paper, soap, shampoo
- Hair checked for in the drain, on the floor and along the skirting
Build a restock list and keep it with the property
Turnovers go wrong when the routine lives only in one person's head. Write the checklist down, keep spare linen sets on site so a stained sheet never delays a changeover, and note consumable levels at every visit. If you use a cleaner, give them the list rather than assuming a shared standard.
Same-day turnovers
Back-to-back bookings leave a narrow window, often with a hard check-in time. That is where most hosts start missing things. We schedule short-term rental turnovers as fixed slots with a confirmed finish time, and can hold a linen set on site so a changeover never depends on a wash cycle finishing.
